What is Rowasa?
Rowasa is a brand-name prescription medication used to treat pain and inflammation caused by ulcerative colitis. This medication is known as an aminosalicylate anti-inflammatory drug. It works by blocking the production of natural chemicals in the body that may cause pain. Rowasa does not cure ulcerative colitis, but it may help to relieve mild-to-moderate pain and decrease the frequency of diarrhea or bloody stools.
Read and follow the directions provided in the product leaflet that comes with this medication. Rowasa is available in the form of a rectal kit that is usually used once daily at bedtime. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.
Rowasa works best if you have a bowel movement before using it. Shake the solution well before use. The applicator tip of this medication is usually inserted into the rectum and gently squeezed to apply the contents.
