What is Lidoderm?
Lidoderm is a topical medication that is used to treat a specific type of pain called post-herpetic neuralgia, which is caused by an infection of shingles. Lidoderm works by blocking nerve signals in your body. Lidoderm causes a temporary loss of feeling in the area where the medicated patch of Lidoderm is applied.
Lidoderm belongs to a class of drugs called topical anesthetics. Lidoderm is available in the form of a medicated patch which is only to be applied to healthy and normal skin. Lidoderm may be applied with your fingertips or a cotton swab. The prescribed number of Lidoderm patches is usually applied once daily for up to twelve hours or as instructed by your doctor. It is not recommended to apply more than three patches once a day or leave any patch on for longer than 12 hours in any 24-hour period. Skin that is cut or irritated may also absorb more topical medication than healthy skin so do not use Lidoderm on any skin like this.
