What is Caladryl?
Caladryl is an over-the-counter lotion to treat skin irritations such as insect bites, skin irritation, and rash due to poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac.
Caladryl combines pramoxine with calamine and camphor. Pramoxine is a topical anesthetic that shuts down nerve signals and numbs the affected area. Calamine, which gives Caladryl its pink color, is a drying agent combining zinc oxide and iron oxide. Zinc oxide blocks the release of histamines which cause swelling and itching. Iron oxide (rust) dries out the blisters and swelling in the affected area. Camphor is an inactive ingredient, but, like menthol, produces a “cool” and refreshing feeling on the skin.
