Valacyclovir Hcl is a prodrug of acyclovir. This means that Valacyclovir Hcl itself is inactive. Once you take a dose of Valacyclovir Hcl, it is quickly converted in the body to acyclovir, the active drug. Once converted to acyclovir, the half-life (the amount of time it takes for half the amount of drug to clear from the body) is about 3 hours. It takes about 5 or 6 half-lives, or 15 to 18 hours, to clear a dose of Valacyclovir Hcl. However, if you continue to take the drug as prescribed, it will stay in your system until about 15 to 18 hours after the last dose.
