Elestrin is an FDA-approved prescription female sex hormone used to reduce moderate to severe symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and vaginal discomfort. This medication is a form of the female sex hormone estrogen. During menopause, estrogen levels in women decrease, leading to hot flashes and other symptoms. This medication works by replacing estrogen that the body would normally make.
This medication comes in the form of a 0.06% transdermal gel. It must be applied only to clean, dry, unbroken skin. You should not apply this medication to skin that is red or irritated. Elestrin is usually applied once daily to the upper arm with the use of a metered-dose pump. Talk to your doctor to find out more about how to go about using this medication and about the dose that is right for you.
Your doctor may decide on your dose based on your current medical condition and your body's response to the medication. This medication should not be applied to your breasts and it should not be used if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor if you have a medical history of heart attacks, strokes, or blood clots before you start taking this medication. Avoid smoking while using Elestrin, as smoking can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack. Keep Elestrin out of the reach of children and pets.
Common side effects that may occur while taking Elestrin include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or bloating, breast pain or tenderness, weight changes, vaginal bleeding or spotting, or headaches. Contact your doctor if you experience any of these or other side effects that do not subside.
Allergic reactions to Elestrin are rare. Get emergency medical help if you have hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue.
In rare cases, this medication may cause serious blood clotting issues such as heart attacks, strokes, pulmonary embolism, or deep vein thrombosis. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice signs of serious side effects such as pain in your jaw, chest, or left arm, unusual sweating, slurred speech, severe headaches, and/or swelling of the legs. Report unusual vaginal bleeding to your doctor right away.

People with liver disease, bleeding problems, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, or a high risk of blood clots should not use Elestrin. Also, if you are going to have major surgery, you should not use Elestrin. If you have ever had a heart attack, stroke, blood clot, or cancer of the vagina, breast, cervix/uterus, you should not use Elestrin.
