What is Alora?

Alora is manufactured by Allergan as an estradiol patch for menopausal or post-menopausal women. The active ingredient, ethinyl estradiol, is one of three estrogens naturally produced in a woman's body, but the body's production of estradiol falls off during and after menopause. The Alora patch slowly releases estradiol for three to four days to replace the estrogen no longer made by the body.

Alora is prescribed to menopausal or postmenopausal women to treat physical changes due to decreased production of estrogen, including hot flashes, vaginal discomfort, and bone loss. Alora is prescribed in four separate strengths that deliver estradiol into the body from 0.025 mg to 0.1 mg per day.

Alora is contained in a skin patch with 1 mg of estradiol. It is placed by the patient on the abdomen or upper buttocks twice per week.

What are the side effects of Alora?

While not a complete list, common side effects of Alora include headache, back pain, breast pain, vaginal irritation, bloating, stomach cramps, and nausea. In addition, there may be redness or irritation on the skin where the patch was located. For this reason, patients are advised to switch patch locations each week.

Once removed, used Alora patches still contain a small amount of estradiol that can be easily absorbed through the skin. It is important that the patch is disposed of properly and does not come in contact with others, particularly children.
