What is the brand name of Estradiol?

Estradiol is a generic prescription drug that comes as an oral tablet, vaginal insert, vaginal cream, and topical emulsion, among other formulations. It is available under different brand names, depending on the formulation. Brand names of Estradiol include Estrace, Yuvafem, Vivelle-Dot, Alora, and Divigel.

What is Estradiol?

Estradiol is an FDA-approved prescription medication containing a form of the female hormone estrogen. Women experience low estrogen levels with menopause, which can cause a range of different symptoms. Estradiol works by replenishing the levels of estrogen in the body. It is typically prescribed to help relieve symptoms of menopause, such as vaginal dryness and hot flashes.

Estradiol can also be used for the prevention of bone loss or osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Women who are unable to produce enough estrogen naturally may also be prescribed Estradiol. In addition, Estradiol can be prescribed for the palliative treatment of advanced prostate cancer in men and metastatic breast cancer in men and women.

Estradiol vaginal preparations are preferred over oral tablets for vaginal symptoms of menopause, including vaginal dryness, itching, and burning. A healthcare provider may recommend switching to an oral formulation to deliver higher doses or provide other benefits, such as relief from vasomotor symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats.

Estradiol should only be used as directed by your doctor. The recommended dose will be based on an assessment of your overall medical condition and your response to treatment.

What are the side effects of Estradiol?

The most common side effects of Estradiol include headache, nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, irregular vaginal bleeding, abdominal cramps, bloating, and hair loss. Other side effects may include high blood pressure, high blood sugar, fluid retention, vaginal yeast infections, and liver problems. If side effects persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider.

Serious side effects of Estradiol include blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, dementia, gallbladder disease, and cancer of the breasts, uterus, or ovaries. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you notice symptoms of serious side effects, including breast lumps, severe headaches, chest pain, shortness of breath, pain in the legs, visual changes, and abnormal vaginal bleeding. You may need to avoid using Estradiol if you have a history of blood clots, strokes, heart attacks, liver problems, allergic reactions to estrogen-containing products, or estrogen-dependent cancer.

Other side effects may occur as this is not a complete list. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice about other possible side effects, warnings, and precautions before starting treatment.

What are Estradiol dosage forms?

Estradiol is available in various forms and strengths.

  • Oral tablet: 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg

  • Vaginal insert: 4 mcg and 10 mcg

  • Vaginal cream: 0.01%

  • Vaginal ring: 0.05 mg and 0.1 mg per day

  • Topical gel: 0.06% and 0.1%

  • Transdermal patch: 14 mcg, 0.025 mg, 0.0375 mg, 0.05 mg, 0.06 mg, 0.075 mg, and 0.1 mg per day.

The dosage of Estradiol will depend on the formulation prescribed, the condition being treated, and whether the patient has an intact uterus, among other factors. In general, the lowest effective dosage is prescribed to ensure maximum effectiveness with the lowest risk of side effects. Treatment is usually cyclic in women with an intact uterus (three weeks of treatment followed by one week off). Treatment should be reevaluated every three to six months.

Is Estradiol the same as estrogen?

Estradiol, or E2, is the body’s primary form of estrogen that is present during the reproductive years. It is also the most potent form of estrogen produced in men and women. After menopause, Estradiol is depleted. Estradiol can be prescribed as a hormone replacement therapy to restore normal levels of estrogen. The other forms of estrogen include estrone (E1), which is produced after menopause, and estriol (E3), which is produced during pregnancy.
