What is Colchicine-Probenecid?
Colchicine-Probenecid is a generic prescription drug prescribed to patients with recurrent attacks of gout to reduces uric acid in the urine and bloodstream. Gout is an acutely painful joint disease in which uric acid builds up in the urine and in the body. The excess uric acid forms crystals in the joints, particularly the feet, resulting in intense pain, swelling, and redness.
Probenecid prevents the kidneys from reabsorbing uric acid back into the body, so it passes out with the urine. Colchicine is a urine alkalizer, that is, it neutralizes the acid in urine. Probenecid increases the amount of uric acid in the kidneys, increasing the risk of uric acid kidney stones if the urine is too acid. By neutralizing acid, colchicine reduces the chances of kidney stone formation.
Colchicine-Probenecid is taken as a tablet daily for one week and twice a day in the weeks following. Colchicine-Probenecid is not started during a gouty attack. The patient should drink plenty of water because the kidneys will be flushing uric acid crystals. The physician will monitor levels of urate, a salt derived from uric acid, in the urine and adjust the dose to a maintenance dose when these levels have returned to normal.

The most common side effects of Colchicine-Probenecid include but are not limited to headache, dizziness, nausea, loss of appetite, nausea, frequent urination, sore gums, back pain, fast heartbeat, or and kidney pain.
