Voriconazole belongs to the azole antifungals drug class and is commonly used to treat fungal infections such as invasive aspergillosis, esophageal candidiasis, and other fungal infections caused by Scedosporium apiospermum and Fusarium species. Azole antifungals like Voriconazole work by disrupting the fungal cell membrane, which kills the fungus and prevents further growth.
Drugs such as cisapride, efavirenz, pimozide, quinidine, rifabutin, rifampin, and ritonavir can interact with Voriconazole and should be avoided during treatment with this medication. If you are using any of these drugs for a pre-existing medical condition, inform your doctor before starting treatment with Voriconazole. Tell your doctor about any medications you may be taking, such as other prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal supplements. To determine if Voriconazole is right for you, inform your doctor if you have or have had heart disease, a heart rhythm disorder, low levels of calcium, potassium, or magnesium in your blood, liver or kidney disease, or trouble digesting sugar or dairy products.
Voriconazole has been known to decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills, so you should use other forms of contraceptives while taking Voriconazole. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant then you should not use Voriconazole as it may cause harm to your unborn baby. Breastfeeding mothers should discuss the risks of taking Voriconazole while breastfeeding as this drug may not be safe for your baby.
Vision changes, rash, headache, hallucinations, fast heart rate, nausea, vomiting, and abnormal liver function tests are some of the most common side effects of Voriconazole. Consult a healthcare provider if you experience side effects, or side effects persist or worsen.
Serious side effects like increased or slowed heart rate, kidney problems, or liver problems are possible rare side effects while using this drug. Voriconazole can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, so sunlight should be avoided while taking Voriconazole. Allergic reactions are also possible. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as rash, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face or throat.
This is an incomplete list of side effects. Speak to your doctor or healthcare provider for medical advice on other side effects that may occur while using this drug. You may also report side effects to the FDA. Talk to your doctor about other drug interactions and precautions before taking Voriconazole.
