Cresemba is an azole antifungal used to treat invasive aspergillosis and invasive mucormycosis in adults. Invasive aspergillosis develops when the fungal infection spreads rapidly from the lungs to the brain, heart, kidneys, or skin. Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis typically occurs in people whose immune systems are weakened as a result of cancer chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation, or a disease of the immune system. Invasive mucormycosis is a serious but rare fungal infection caused by a group of microorganisms called Mucorales. This infection also typically affects people with weakened immune systems, such as people who have had an organ transplant.
Drugs in the azole antifungals drug class contain an azole ring in their chemical structure, and they work by inhibiting the growth of different types of fungi.
You should not use Cresemba if you are allergic to its active ingredient, isavuconazonium sulfate, or if you have short QT syndrome (a genetic heart rhythm disorder). To ensure this drug is right for you, tell your doctor if you have liver disease, heart rhythm problems, or a known allergy to antifungal medicine, such as fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, posaconazole, or voriconazole. You should also tell your doctor about any medications you take, including over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements, before taking Cresemba.
Common side effects associated with Cresemba include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, swelling in the arms or legs, headache, back pain, cough, shortness of breath, low potassium levels, and abnormal liver function tests. Serious side effects of Cresemba include liver problems and infusion reactions, such as chills, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.
