Neupogen (filgrastim) is a man-made form of a protein that stimulates the growth of white blood cells in the body. This prescription drug is used to treat neutropenia, a lack of certain white blood cells caused by cancer, bone marrow transplant, receiving chemotherapy, or by other conditions. Neutropenia occurs when a person has a low level of neutrophils. Neutrophils, which are made in the bone marrow, fight infection by destroying harmful bacteria and fungi (yeast) that invade the body. Neutropenia may increase the risk of fever, infections, and ulcers.
Neupogen is an injection that is administered under the skin (subcutaneous) or through a vein (intravenous). The dosage usually depends on body weight. It is usually given following chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant. This drug should not be used if you have an allergy to filgrastim or pegfilgrastim.
If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding then you should consult your health care provider since Neupogen may possibly harm an unborn baby.
Common side effects of Neupogen can include fever, cough, trouble breathing, nosebleeds, bone pain, muscle or joint pain, diarrhea, headache, numbness, rash, or thinning hair.
In rare cases, Neupogen has been known to cause an enlarged spleen which could rupture or tear. Call your doctor immediately if you notice a sudden or severe pain in your left upper stomach region that spreads up to your shoulder.
This may be an incomplete list of side effects associated with Neupogen. Call your doctor for medical advice about other side effects that can occur. You may also report side effects to the FDA.
