Is there a generic of Noxafil?

Noxafil is a brand-name prescription drug. The generic version of Noxafil is posaconazole.

What is Noxafil?

Noxafil is an FDA-approved prescription antifungal medication used to treat certain fungal infections in patients who have severely weakened immune systems like patients who have had chemotherapy. It may also be used to treat fungal infections in the throat and mouth. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as azole antifungals. It works by stopping the growth of fungi.

This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet or suspension. The tablet should be swallowed whole and can be taken with or without food, but the suspension should be taken with a full meal. If you cannot take this medication with a full meal then you should use a liquid nutritional supplement or a carbonated beverage. Shake well before use and carefully measure the appropriate amount before use. Use an oral syringe or medicine measuring cup. Do not use kitchen measuring devices. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.

Continue using this medication until your prescription is complete, even if you no longer experience the symptoms of your condition. Fungal infections may still linger and can return if you stop using this medication before the period advised to you by your doctor. Before taking Noxafil, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and history, as well as all of the medicines you take, including Rx, OTC, vitamins, and supplements—some medications interact with Noxafil.

What are the side effects of Noxafil?

Noxafil may cause unwanted side effects such as vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, fever, headaches, coughing, abdominal pain, dizziness, trouble sleeping, or upset stomach. Contact your doctor if you experience any side effects.

Talk to your doctor right away or seek emergency medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of serious side effects such as swelling of your hands or feet, fast or pounding heartbeat, fluttering in the chest, or sudden dizziness. Other serious symptoms that require medical attention include signs of liver problems (nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes) or electrolyte imbalance (feeling very thirsty, increased urination, constipation, muscle pain, jitters, or irregular heartbeat). Allergic reactions are rare, but if you have symptoms such as hives, trouble breathing, or swelling around the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help.

Ask your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Noxafil, as this is not a complete list of side effects or drug interactions.
