Climara Pro is an FDA-approved transdermal system or skin patch that is used to reduce hot flashes in postmenopausal women who have an intact uterus. Climara Pro is also used to prevent bone loss. Climara Pro works by replacing two female sex hormones, estradiol and levonorgestrel, which decline in the female body during and after menopause.
You should not use this medication if you have had a hysterectomy or you have had surgery to remove your uterus. Climara Pro contains medicine that reduces your chances of getting cancer of the uterus, but if you do not have a uterus, you should not use this medication.
Only use Climara Pro if your healthcare provider has prescribed it to you. Climara Pro patch is applied to clean dry skin on your lower abdomen. You should not place this patch to your breasts or waistline. Each patch should be worn for one week then replaced with a new patch to a different part of your lower abdomen. Avoid wearing tight clothing that may rub against your Climara Pro patch. You should also avoid exposing your Climara Pro patch to sunlight for prolonged periods of time. To ensure this medication is working as it should you should have regular pelvic exams and mammograms.
Before you start using Climara Pro, you should let your doctor know if you have heart disease, high cholesterol, unusual vaginal bleeding or if you are breastfeeding as this medication can be passed onto breast milk. Medications like Climara Pro that contain estrogen and progestin should not be used to prevent cardiovascular disease or dementia.
You should also inform your doctor about other medical conditions you may have or if you have a family history of angioedema, heart attack, liver disease, kidney disease, gallbladder disease, porphyria, and endometriosis or uterine fibroids. Tell your healthcare provider about the treatments you may be using, including over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements to avoid drug interactions.
Avoid drinking or using grapefruit juice, erythromycin, clarithromycin, and ritonavir as they can affect how this medication works. Other medications you should avoid while using Climara Pro include ketoconazole, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, and st john's wort.
Using Climara Pro can increase your risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Common side effects of Climara Pro include but aren't limited to headache, breast pain, back pain, bloating, irregular vaginal bleeding, stomach cramps, fluid retention, and redness at the application site of the patch.
Call your doctor immediately if you experience serious side effects like heart attack, stroke, stabbing chest pain, blood clots, high blood pressure, fluid retention or rapid weight gain, and severe headaches.
