Pylera is a prescription medicine used (generally in combination with the drug omeprazole) to treat peptic ulcer caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. It is a combination medicine. Each Pylera capsule contains three ingredients: bismuth subcitrate potassium, metronidazole, and tetracycline.
Take your medicine with a full glass of water. Swallow the Pylera capsule whole. Do not chew or crush. Do not take Pylera with milk or antacids.
Take this medicine for the full length of treatment, even if you start to feel better. If you skip doses, your infection could become resistant to medication.
Store Pylera at room temperature. Keep away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Keep each capsule in the blister pack until you are ready to take it.
If you miss a dose of Pylera, take it as soon as you can. However, if it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at once. If you miss more than 4 doses, consult your health care provider for guidance.
Common side effects of Pylera may include discolored feces, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, indigestion, altered taste, weakness, dizziness, black tongue, and tooth discoloration, among others. Tell your doctor if you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody. Pylera can also cause sun sensitivity, so avoid sunlight and tanning beds, and wear protective clothing and sunscreen while outdoors.
Serious side effects can occur, too. If you have any symptoms that indicate a skin or allergic reaction, you should get emergency medical help. These symptoms may include hives, difficulty breathing, swelling, fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple rash, blistering, or peeling skin.

Pylera is not safe for everyone. Before taking Pylera, tell your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you have. You should not take Pylera if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication or similar drugs. Others who should not take Pylera include:
Anyone under eight years old
People who use alcohol
People who have taken disulfiram within 14 days
People with severe kidney or liver problems
Individuals who are pregnant
People with Cockayne syndrome

Metronidazole, an ingredient in Pylera, has caused cancer in animal studies. It is not known if this applies to humans.
Before taking Pylera, tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins, and supplements.
Some substance and drug interactions include:
Alcohol: Avoid alcohol while taking Pylera and for at least three days after your last dose of Pylera. Combining alcohol with Pylera can cause you to become very sick with stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and flushing. Also, check alcohol content in products such as sauces, cough syrups, and mouthwashes. Do not use any products that contain alcohol or propylene glycol while you take Pylera.
Disulfiram
Oral birth control pills (ask your healthcare provider about a different form of birth control such as condoms or a vaginal ring)
Blood thinners
Lithium
Antacids
