Zegerid belongs to a class of prescription drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It is used to treat heartburn, GERD, erosive esophagitis, stomach ulcers, and duodenal ulcers. Zegerid is a combination drug that contains omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate. Omeprazole works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Sodium bicarbonate, an antacid, helps neutralize acid in the stomach, which aids the absorption of omeprazole so it can work better.
Zegerid is indicated for use in anyone above the age of 18 years old and is available in a capsule form. You should take your Zegerid prescription only as prescribed by your doctor.
Zegerid contains sodium, so you should let your primary healthcare provider know if you are on a low-salt diet. Also tell your primary healthcare provider about any allergies you have to omeprazole, sodium bicarbonate, or any similar drugs.
Common side effects of Zegerid may include headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and gas. Other possible side effects include rash, constipation, cough, back pain, and dizziness. Contact your healthcare provider if these side effects persist of worsen.
Zegerid may increase your risk of bone fractures, especially if it is used for extended periods of time. Long-term Zegerid use may also increase the risk of vitamin B12 deficiency.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice and other possible side effects, warnings, and precautions before using Zegerid.
