What is Angeliq?

Angeliq is a combination prescription medication used to treat menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, and vaginal dryness, burning, and irritation in women who have not had a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus). Angeliq contains drospirenone and estradiol. Drospirenone is a progestin female hormone that helps regulate ovulation and menstruation. Estradiol is a female hormone involved in the development and maintenance of the female reproductive system.

If you have undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, coronary artery disease, a bleeding disorder, kidney disease, liver disease, adrenal gland disorder, if you will have major surgery, if you have had a hysterectomy, or if you have ever had a heart attack, a stroke, a blood clot, or cancer of the breast, or uterus then you should not use this drug.

Angeliq should not be used to prevent heart disease, stroke, or dementia, as this medicine may heighten your risk of developing these conditions.

What are the side effects of Angeliq?

Some- but not all- of the side effects of Angeliq include headache, mood changes, vaginal itching or discharge, changes in your menstrual periods, breakthrough bleeding, breast pain, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, or fluid retention (swelling, rapid weight gain).

If you experience heart attack symptoms like chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, nausea, sweating, signs of a stroke like sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body), sudden severe headache, slurred speech, problems with vision or signs of a blood clot like sudden vision loss, stabbing chest pain, feeling short of breath, coughing up blood, pain or warmth in one or both legs then you should stop using Angeliq and contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible.
