Vanoxide-Hc is a brand-name prescription acne treatment. Its active ingredients, benzoyl peroxide and hydrocortisone, can be purchased separately in a wide range of over-the-counter and prescription acne and skin topical medications, both brand-name and generic. The generic version of Vanoxide-Hc, "benzoyl peroxide and hydrocortisone," is manufactured by Qualitest.
What is Vanoxide-Hc?
Vanoxide-Hc is a prescription acne treatment. The active ingredients in Vanoxide-Hc are benzoyl peroxide and hydrocortisone.
Benzoyl peroxide is a widely used ingredient in over-the-counter and prescription acne medications. It has bacteria-killing properties with few side effects. It kills the bacteria that cause acne by increasing the amount of oxygen in the skin tissues. Oxygen is toxic to the bacteria that cause acne. Benzoyl peroxide also opens pores, reduces skin swelling, and softens the outer layers of skin, making them easier to peel or rub off.
Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that reduces swelling. When absorbed into the skin, it reduces the swelling and reddening that characterizes acne blemishes.
Vanoxide-Hc is applied as a lotion to the affected area as a thin film once to three times a day.
What are the side effects of Vanoxide-Hc?
The most common side effects of benzoyl peroxide are site reactions, such as skin irritation, burning, stinging, dry skin, peeling, flaking, redness, or allergic reactions, such as itchiness, rash, and swelling.
Hydrocortisone produces noticeable side effects more frequently than benzoyl peroxide. These side effects include site reactions such as burning, dryness, and irritation. Over the long term, hydrocortisone can cause swollen follicles, stretch marks, thinning skin, loss of skin pigment, and acne. Allergic reactions are common. You should discontinue Vanoxide-Hc if you experience any allergic reactions or if site reactions last too long.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about the side effects of Vanoxide-Hc.
