What is Retin-A?

Retin-A is a prescription topical acne treatment. The active ingredient in Retin-A, tretinoin, helps cell turnover and reduces the amount of oil produced by the face, making it more difficult for pores to clog and pimples to form. Tretinoin is a retinoid and is derived from vitamin A. All retinoids affect the way skin cells develop and this may decrease oil production in the treated area.

Tretinoin should be applied externally, avoiding the mouth, eyes, and mucus membranes.

Initially, tretinoin will make acne worse for the first few days of treatment. It usually takes a few weeks or months of daily application before there is any visible improvement in acne, but that improvement could be sudden and dramatic.

Retin-A is also sold in a micronized form to allow for more efficient absorption of the active ingredient by the skin.

What are the side effects of Retin-A?

The active ingredient in Retin-A, tretinoin, causes few side effects, most of which are site reactions on the treated area, such as warmth, redness, stinging, burning, itching, and dry skin. Allergic reactions are very similar to these side effects, such as itchiness, rash, and swelling. You should discontinue Retin-A if you experience any swelling, rash, or if site reactions last too long.

Avoid exposure to sunlight when using Retin-A. If you must be in the sun, wear protective clothing and sunscreen, and limit your time in the sun. If you have sunburn, do not use Retin-A until you are fully recovered. Other topical medications can interact with Retin-A. Consult your healthcare provider for more information on drug interactions with Retin-A.
