What is Differin?
Differin is a brand-name medication used to treat acne in people aged 12 years and up. It may help to decrease the severity and number of pimples and promote fast healing of pimples that may develop.
The active ingredient in Differin is adapalene. Adapalene belongs to a class of medications known as retinoids. They work by affecting the growth rate of cells and decreasing inflammation and swelling. Note that this medication is not meant as a treatment for eczema.
This medication may be available as either a prescription drug or an over-the-counter drug.
The acne treatment medication comes in the form of a topical cream and is only meant for use on the skin only. It should not be ingested. Avoid putting this medication on your lips or in your eyes. If this medication gets in your eyes, wash with a large amount of water and call your doctor for medical advice if eye irritation develops. You should not apply Differin to scraped, cut, or sunburnt areas of the skin.
During the first few weeks of using this medication, your acne may appear worse than normal because the medication is interacting with pimples forming inside the skin. You may not see any noticeable changes until eight to 12 weeks of use.
What are the side effects of Differin?
After applying Differin gel, you may experience a brief sensation of warmth or stinging where the medication was applied. Other side effects include but are not limited to redness, itching, dryness, scaling, and mild burning of the skin. These side effects usually decrease after a while as your body becomes adjusted to the medication.
If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, you should contact your doctor or dermatologist promptly. Your doctor may recommend decreasing the strength of your dosage or to stop using it completely. Inquire at your doctor's office or local pharmacy to learn about other side effects that have not been listed here and how to reduce and avoid certain side effects.
