Is there a generic of Erythromycin?

Erythromycin is a generic drug, made by various pharmaceutical companies.

What is Erythromycin?

Erythromycin is a generic prescription medicine used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections.

This type of drug is classified as a macrolide antibiotic and works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This medication is only effective against certain bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

Once you begin using this medication, it is important that you consistently take it as prescribed, even if your symptoms start to go away. Stopping this medication too early may result in a return of the infection—or lead to antibiotic resistance.

Tell your healthcare provider about all of the medications you take (prescription drugs, OTC medicines, vitamins, and supplements) as some medications have dangerous interactions with Erythromycin. Also, inform your healthcare provider about all of the medical conditions you have before taking Erythromycin.

What are the side effects of Erythromycin?

While using Erythromycin you may experience side effects such as vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, cramping, loss of appetite, and others. Contact your healthcare provider if these or other side effects do not subside.

An allergic reaction is rare, but people who experience hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue should seek emergency medical attention right away.

In some rare cases, this medication may cause severe diarrhea due to Clostridium difficile. This condition may occur during treatment or after treatment has ended (even several months later). Tell your doctor right away if you develop persistent diarrhea, stomach pain, cramping, or blood in your stool. Seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for additional information.

What to avoid when taking Erythromycin?

While taking Erythromycin, take it exactly as prescribed. Do not stop taking it before the full treatment is finished.

Also, avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice or eating a lot of grapefruit, as grapefruit interacts with Erythromycin. Since certain medications interact with Erythromycin, do not start any new medications while taking Erythromycin unless approved by your health care provider.

Which is better, amoxicillin or Erythromycin?

In terms of efficacy, the appropriate drug for you depends on the infection being treated. Both drugs are effective antibiotics. Your healthcare provider will determine which antibiotic is best for you based on various factors, such as your symptoms, the bacteria your healthcare provider suspects (or knows if a culture and sensitivity test was performed) is causing the infection, allergies to medications, and potential drug interactions. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice.
