Azithromycin is an FDA-approved antibiotic. Azithromycin uses include treatment for various bacterial infections, such as strep throat, ear infections (otitis media), sinusitis, and some sexually transmitted diseases. Azithromycin is not used to treat influenza, the common cold, or other viral infections.
Azithromycin is available in many forms including an oral tablet, oral suspension, single-dose powder for suspension, eye drop, and intravenous (IV) injection. You may take Azithromycin with or without food. Learn more about Azithromycin dosages here.
When on treatment using Azithromycin, you should avoid taking antacids that contain ingredients such as aluminum or magnesium. Otherwise, if you have to take an antacid, you should separate the antacid and Azithromycin by at least two hours. This is because antacids can cause Azithromycin to become less effective when taken simultaneously. Ask a healthcare professional for a full list of Azithromycin interactions.
You should avoid sun exposure or tanning while on treatment with Azithromycin because it can make you burn easier. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin when you are outdoors.
Some common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, and abdominal pain. Consult your doctor for medical advice regarding Azithromycin and its side effects.
If you have serious side effects such as an allergic reaction while taking Azithromycin, seek medical help urgently. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Other serious reactions may include conditions called Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis. If you have a fever, burning eyes, sore throat, red or purple rash, or blistering or peeling skin, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
You should let your doctor know if you have any underlying medical conditions before starting treatment with Azithromycin to make sure it is safe for you to use. For example, you should not use Azithromycin if you've ever experienced jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes) or have had liver problems while taking Azithromycin. You should also not use Azithromycin if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it, or to other similar drugs such as erythromycin or clarithromycin.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding before taking Azithromycin.
Store Azithromycin tablets or suspension at room temperature, away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Do not store Azithromycin in the bathroom. Keep Azithromycin out of reach and out of sight of children and pets.
Azithromycin is a generic drug. Brand names for Azithromycin include Zithromax, Zithromax Z-Pak, and Zithromax Tri-Pak.
