Is there a generic of Zithromax?

Zithromax is the brand-name version manufactured by Pfizer, Inc. Azithromycin is the generic version of Zithromax.

What is Zithromax?

Zithromax (azithromycin) is a brand-name prescription drug. It's FDA-approved for the treatment of bacterial infections. It may be recommended for the treatment of respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and some sexually transmitted diseases. Azasite, which is azithromycin in eye drop form,  can also be used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis.

Consult a pediatrician on the usage of Zithromax for children, as it should not be given to a child under the age of 6 months.

Consult your healthcare professional concerning the correct dosage and frequency for your diagnosis. Zithromax may be taken with or without food and should be taken at regular intervals, as directed by a doctor. Increasing the dosage will not increase the effectiveness, and skipping doses or stopping the medication before instructed may lead to the risk of further infection.

If using the pediatric oral suspension, always shake the bottle before using and store away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Use a measuring device such as an oral syringe or measuring cup provided by the pharmacy—do not use kitchen measuring devices. Discard after finishing the treatment regimen.

What are the side effects of Zithromax?

The most common side effects of Zithromax include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Consult your doctor for medical advice if side effects persist or get worse.

Severe allergic reactions to Zithromax are not common. However, if you experience symptoms like difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, seek emergency medical treatment. Also, immediately contact your healthcare professional should you experience changes in hearing, problems with vision, muscle weakness, or symptoms of liver problems like yellow skin or eyes.

Prolonged or repeated use of Zithromax may cause oral thrush or yeast infection. Contact a healthcare professional should you notice a change in vaginal discharge or white patches in the mouth. During or after treatment has been stopped, clostridium difficile diarrhea may occur. Notify your doctor if you have watery or bloody stools.

This is not a complete list of side effects and other adverse effects can possibly occur. Seek medical advice from your doctor to make sure Zithromax is safe for you to use. Tell your doctor about all of the medical conditions you have and any medications you take, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and vitamins.
