Reclast is a brand-name prescription drug that helps prevent bone loss in patients with or at risk for osteoporosis. These patients may include postmenopausal women, men with osteoporosis, patients using steroid medication, or those with Paget's disease, a rare condition in which the body's ability to replace bone is compromised.
Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones lose their density and strength, which can cause them to become vulnerable to fractures, or breaks. If not enough calcium is consumed in the diet, the body will remove calcium from the bone to use it throughout the body. Calcium is vital to many life processes and cell functions. The body normally balances the amount of calcium circulating in the blood with the amount of calcium stored in the bone. Osteoporosis can develop when the body can no longer maintain this balance and removes too much calcium from the bone.
Reclast works by blocking the action of certain cells in the bone, called osteoclasts, that are responsible for absorbing bone calcium back into the body. Reclast also causes the death of some of these cells.
Reclast is administered over 15 minutes as an intravenous infusion. It is given once per year or once every two years depending on the underlying condition.
The most common side effects of Reclast are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, joint pain, muscle pain, dizziness, and flu-like symptoms.
Some people may experience injection site reactions, such as pain, redness, or irritation around the area of infusion.
Because Reclast prevents the reabsorption of calcium from the bones back into the body, low blood calcium levels are a common side effect and can be serious. Symptoms of low blood calcium levels may include muscle spasms, numbness, and tingling around the fingers, toes, and mouth. Calcium and vitamin D may need to be supplemented during treatment with Reclast.
Other serious side effects of Reclast may include kidney problems, atypical femur fractures, and osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), or the death of bone cells in the jaw.
Consult your doctor or healthcare provider on other possible side effects, warnings, and precautions before using Reclast.
