Is there a generic of Fosamax?

Fosamax is a brand-name drug, manufactured by Merck. Alendronate is the FDA-approved generic version of Fosamax. Binosto is a brand-name drug that contains alendronate and is similar to Fosamax.

What is Fosamax?

Fosamax contains alendronate, which belongs to the bisphosphonate drug class. It is used to prevent or treat certain types of bone loss in adults. Fosamax treats several bone conditions such as osteoporosis caused by menopause, osteoporosis caused by taking steroids, and Paget's disease of bone in men and women. It is also used in men with osteoporosis to increase bone mass. Bones may lose their mass and break more easily due to these conditions. Bisphosphonates block the activity of bone-resorbing cells (osteoclasts) and promote the activity of bone-building cells (osteoblasts), which can help rebuild and maintain bone mass.

Fosamax is available in the form of a tablet that is taken either once daily or once per week. The dosage of Fosamax prescribed depends on your medical condition. Tell your healthcare professional if you have problems with swallowing, digestive problems, low levels of calcium, kidney disease, or malabsorption syndrome. It is not recommended to crush or chew Fosamax tablets.

Fosamax should be taken in the morning at least 30 minutes before you eat or drink anything or take any other medicine. Use this drug at the same time every day or the same day each week. It should be taken with a full glass of plain water only. Do not use coffee, tea, soda, juice, or mineral water. It is not recommended to lie down or take any other medicines, including vitamins, calcium supplements, or antacids for 30 mins after taking Fosamax.

Contact your doctor or healthcare provider for additional medical advice.
