Prolia is a brand-name prescription drug. There is no generic alternative available for this medication.
Prolia is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat osteoporosis in women who are at high risk for bone fracture due to menopause. Osteoporosis is a form of bone disease that arises when your body loses an excess amount of bone tissue or makes too little bone. Due to this, bones become weak and may break easily. The risk of developing osteoporosis usually increases after menopause.
Denosumab is the active ingredient in Prolia and it works by blocking a protein in the body known as RANK ligand. By blocking this protein, Prolia limits the activity of cells that break down old bone material. This helps to increase bone mass and strength.
This medication comes in the form of an injection that is administered in the upper arm, upper thigh, or abdomen. You should only use this medication in doses that are approved by your doctor. Prolia is usually taken once every six months. This medication may also be taken with calcium and vitamin D in order to boost its effectiveness in encouraging bone growth.
This medication may cause calcium levels to decline, especially if you are suffering from kidney problems. Your doctor may recommend that you take calcium and vitamin D to counteract this side effect. Calcium blood tests may also be needed before your first injection and during treatment to monitor your progress. Contact your doctor right away if you experience signs of low calcium such as muscle spasms, numbness, mood changes, irregular heartbeats, and severe dizziness.
Prolia may also negatively affect your immune system. You may be more likely to get a serious infection such as ear, skin or bladder infection while using this medication. Tell your doctor right away if you notice signs of any infections such as fever, muscle pain, back pain, chills, swollen skin, or severe abdominal pain.
This is not a complete list of side effects so you can also experience other effects not listed here while using this medication. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Prolia.
