Alendronate Sodium is a generic drug prescribed to patients with or at risk for osteoporosis, a condition in which bone is reabsorbed back into the body, making bones less dense and more brittle. Osteoporosis affects women during menopause, patients taking steroids, and people with Paget's disease, a condition that disrupts the body's ability to replace bone.
Bone loss is a normal process. Calcium is vital to many of the body's functions, including driving the electrical conductance of nerve cells and activating muscles. The body uses the bones as a “calcium bank,” and reabsorbs calcium from the bones when the body needs it. There are cells in the bone, called osteoclasts, whose only job is to reabsorb calcium from bone and put it in the bloodstream.
