Zoledronic Acid (sometimes called zoledronate) is a medication used to treat a number of bone diseases. These include osteoporosis, high blood calcium due to cancer, bone breakdown due to cancer, and Paget's disease of bone. Zoledronic Acid belongs to the bisphosphonate drug class that works by altering the bone formation and breakdown in the body. This can slow down bone loss and may help prevent bone fractures.
If you are currently using any other bisphosphonate (such as alendronate, ibandronate, pamidronate, risedronate) then Zoledronic Acid is not for you. Tell your doctor if you have or have had kidney disease, hypocalcemia, thyroid or parathyroid surgery, surgery to remove part of your intestine, asthma caused by taking aspirin, any condition that makes it hard for your body to absorb nutrients from food, or a dental problem. Also, tell your doctor if you are dehydrated or if you take a diuretic.
Some of the more common side effects of Zoledronic Acid include fever; muscle, bone, or joint pain; headache; vomiting; tiredness; constipation; shortness of breath; or pain in the extremities. If any of these side effects persist or get worse, call your doctor for advice.
Zoledronic Acid can cause serious kidney problems, especially if you are dehydrated, if you take diuretic medicine, or if you already have kidney disease. In rare cases, it can also cause bone loss (osteonecrosis) in the jaw. Practice good dental care and have regular dental visits while taking this medication. Report any oral symptoms—such as a loose tooth, pain, swelling, or sores that do not heal—to your doctor right away.
Other side effects can occur while using Zoledronic Acid. Seek medical advice from your healthcare professional about other possible side effects that may occur.
