Actonel is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by Allergan. The generic version Actonel is risedronate. Manufacturers of risedronate include Teva, Sun, and Apotex.
Actonel is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and people with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. It is also used to treat osteoporosis in men and Paget’s disease. Actonel belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates and works by slowing bone loss, helping to maintain strong bones, and reducing the risk of broken bones or fractures.
Actonel comes in the form of an oral tablet that is usually taken with a full glass of water 30 minutes before the first meal of the day. Do not use this medication at bedtime or while you are still in bed. You should avoid lying down for 30 minutes after taking Actonel.
