Cabergoline is a generic drug that is produced by various manufacturers. It is also sold under the brand name, Dostinex, which is manufactured by Pfizer.

What is Cabergoline?

Cabergoline is a generic prescription drug sold under the brand name, Dostinex. Cabergoline treats high levels of the hormone prolactin in the body (hyperprolactinemia). It works as a dopamine agonist to decrease the production of prolactin.

Prolactin is usually produced by the body in pregnant and nursing women. This hormone stimulates breast development and milk production. Various illnesses, including cancer, can result in abnormal production of prolactin in both men and women. While normal levels of prolactin can help stimulate milk production, high levels of prolactin can lead to infertility, headaches, irregular periods, and decreased libido.

Cabergoline is normally taken twice per week until prolactin levels become normal. Cabergoline is usually discontinued after prolactin levels remain normal for at least six months. Cabergoline tablets are available in a strength of 0.5 mg.

What are the side effects of Cabergoline?

The most common side effects of Cabergoline include constipation, nausea, dizziness, headache, and fatigue. Other side effects of Cabergoline include abdominal pain, indigestion, vomiting, weakness, breast pain, and nervousness. Cabergoline can also cause mood or mental changes, such as depression, anxiety, and nervousness. Consult a healthcare provider if side effects develop, persist, or worsen. This is not a complete list of side effects.

Rare but serious side effects of Cabergoline include heart failure, scarring in the lungs, and gastrointestinal ulcers. Cabergoline may also cause allergic reactions in those with an allergy to any ingredients in the medication. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience trouble breathing, swelling of the face, or severe rash after taking Cabergoline.

Consult a healthcare professional for other possible side effects, drug interactions, warnings, and precautions before taking Cabergoline.
