Metolazone is a diuretic (“water pill”) that flushes the body of water and salt. Metolazone works by reducing the kidney's ability to reabsorb water or salt from the urine. This will reduce swelling due to heart failure or kidney disease. Before you take Metolazone, review your medical conditions and medical history with your doctor. Also tell your doctor about all of the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
The most common side effects of Metolazone are electrolyte imbalances, such as low potassium, sodium, magnesium, and chloride, and high levels of calcium. A common side effect is feeling dizzy when going from a sitting or lying down position to standing up—this is called orthostatic hypotension. Other common side effects include headache, tiredness, weakness, diarrhea, muscle pain, and itching.
Allergic reactions to Metolazone are rare. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, trouble breathing, or swelling around the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical attention. If you have symptoms of a severe skin reaction, such as red or purple rash, fever, or blistering or peeling skin, get emergency medical help.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions.
