What is Zytiga?
Zytiga a prescription medication that is normally used in combination with drugs such as methylprednisolone or prednisone to treat prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. Zytiga essentially works by reducing androgen production in the body. Androgens are male hormones that can promote tumor growth in the prostate gland. Zytiga is used in men whose prostate cancer cannot be treated with surgery or other medicines.
Before you use Zytiga, tell your doctor or healthcare provider if you have low levels of potassium, infection of any kind, history of heart disease, recent heart attack, hypertension, failure of the heart, fluid retention, or problems with your adrenal gland or pituitary gland.
Though this drug is used by men it should be noted that contact with this drug can harm unborn babies or cause miscarriage. Zytiga should not be handled by a woman who is pregnant or who may become pregnant. If this cannot be avoided, latex gloves should be worn.
It is recommended that you use Zytiga on an empty stomach. You should not eat for at least 2 hours before you take this medicine and for at least 1 hour after you have taken a dose. Though this is recommended, your doctor will give you precise instructions on how you should use this drug.
What are the side effects of Zytiga?
Side effects associated with Zytiga use includes bladder pain, bloating or swelling of the face, arms, hands, lower legs, or feet, bloody or cloudy urine, blurred vision, bone fracture, chest pain or discomfort, decreased urine, difficult, burning, or painful urination, dizziness, and dry mouth.
Some less common side effects may include itching skin or rash, stomach pain or tenderness, sweating, weakness, weight gain, yellow eyes or skin, dilated neck veins, arm, back, or jaw pain, chest tightness or heaviness, clay-colored stools, cool, sweaty skin, dark urine, decreased appetite and decreased urine output.
