Gralise is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to relieve pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia. Postherpetic neuralgia is a lasting nerve pain that lingers after the shingles rash disappears. The active ingredient in Gralise is gabapentin. It belongs to a class of drugs known as anti-seizure or anticonvulsant drugs. These drugs work by altering electrical activity in the brain and influencing the activity of chemicals known as neurotransmitters, which transfer messages between nerve cells. Gralise is not interchangeable with other gabapentin products.
Gralise comes in the form of an oral extended-release tablet and should only be taken as advised by your healthcare provider. During the first few weeks of treatment, your healthcare provider may start you off on a low dose and gradually increase it so your body can adjust to the medication. When you stop taking Gralise, your healthcare provider will instruct you to stop taking the medication slowly. You should not increase or decrease your dosage without consulting your healthcare provider. To get the full benefit of this medication, ensure that you take it as directed, usually once daily with the evening meal. Swallow the Gralise tablet whole. Do not chew, crush, or split the tablet. Store Gralise at room temperature, out of sight, and out of reach of children and pets.
Gralise may cause slowed breathing when used in combination with certain medications or if you have an underlying breathing condition (or if you take too much of this medication). Tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including prescription drugs, OTC medicines, vitamins, and supplements, to ensure that Gralise is compatible with these medicines.
While Gralise is effective in treating nerve pain due to shingles, it may also cause some unwanted side effects. Common side effects may include drowsiness, fatigue, impaired coordination, nausea, dizziness, and others. You may experience these side effects when you start taking this medication, but they may disappear after your body becomes accustomed to treatment. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how Gralise affects you.
Get emergency medical help if you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. In rare cases, patients using this medication have been known to experience depression, suicidal thoughts, and other mental health issues. Inform your healthcare provider or caretaker right away if you notice signs of these changes in your mood, thoughts, or behavior.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your healthcare provider to ask questions or for more information and medical advice before using this medicine.
In clinical studies, a small number of people (reports indicate two to five percent) of people who took Gralise experienced weight gain. This weight gain tends to be minor, about 5 pounds after a month or two of taking Gralise. If weight gain is a concern, talk to your healthcare provider before taking Gralise.
While taking Gralise, wait to start any new medications until you check with your healthcare provider. This includes prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, or supplements (Gralise interacts with certain supplements such as kava). Avoid taking an antacid within two hours before taking Gralise because an antacid could interfere with its absorption.
Also, while taking Gralise, avoid alcohol. Gralise combined with alcohol can cause impairment as well as severe sedation, slowed breathing, unconsciousness, and death in severe cases. If you drink alcohol, consult your healthcare provider before using Gralise. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how Gralise affects you.
