What is Arimidex?
Arimidex is a brand-name prescription drug that treats hormone receptive (HR+) breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is used as an adjuvant treatment (one that is intended to help another treatment, such as radiation therapy) for early breast cancer, a first-line treatment for advanced (spread throughout the breast) or metastatic (spread throughout the body) breast cancer, and a second-line treatment for advanced or metastatic breast cancer following tamoxifen therapy.
Hormone-receptive breast cancer is a type of breast cancer in which the cancer cells divide when estrogen attaches to certain proteins on the surface of the cancer cells. Arimidex works by reducing the amount of estrogen produced by the body, which then slows down the growth of the cancer cells.
In postmenopausal women, estrogen is almost entirely created in the body by an enzyme, aromatase, which converts male hormones into estrogen. The active ingredient in Arimidex, anastrozole, attaches to this enzyme and prevents it from producing estrogen.
Arimidex is taken as 1 mg tablet once daily.
