What is Vraylar?

Vraylar is an FDA-approved medicine that is used once daily to treat patients with certain mental and mood disorders. This includes bipolar disorder, depression associated with bipolar disorder (bipolar depression), and schizophrenia in adults. It is also used to treat depression in adults, in combination with antidepressants. Vraylar is not approved for use in children.

Vraylar contains cariprazine, which belongs to a group of drugs known as atypical antipsychotic drugs. It works by balancing chemicals in the brain that control your mood. These chemicals are called serotonin and dopamine. 

What are the side effects of Vraylar?

Common side effects of Vraylar include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, constipation, indigestion, blurred vision, back pain, dry mouth, and weight gain. 

Some patients who take Vraylar experience orthostatic hypotension (a drop in blood pressure when standing) or fainting, especially with increases in dosage. Your healthcare provider will monitor you, especially if you are at risk for low blood pressure.

Certain patients experience extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS), which are movement disorders related to taking antipsychotics, including Vraylar. One form of EPS is called tardive dyskinesia, which causes facial symptoms such as grimacing, rapid eye blinking, and/or lip smacking. If you experience any movement problems, tremors, or muscle stiffness, contact your healthcare provider right away. 

Other serious adverse reactions may include low white blood cell counts, problems controlling your body temperature, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar or diabetes. 

Serious allergic reactions may occur. If you have symptoms of hives, shortness of breath, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help. 

Serious skin reactions may occur, which also require emergency medical attention. Symptoms may include fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple rash, and blistering or peeling skin.
