Equetro is used to treat acute manic and mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder. A manic episode is a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable behavior. It is uncertain how Equetro works to treat these conditions.
Equetro is also used to treat seizures and works by reducing the spread of seizure activity in the brain and restoring the normal balance of nerve activity.
Equetro is available as 100 mg, 200 mg, and 300 mg extended-release capsules. Your dosage will be based on your condition and how well your body responds to treatment. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may instruct you to start you off at a low dose and later increase your dose slowly.
If you have had bone marrow suppression, or if you are allergic to it or to an antidepressant such as amitriptyline, desipramine, doxepin, imipramine, or nortriptyline then Equetro should not be taken by you. Do not use this drug if have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.
