Geodon is manufactured by Pfizer Inc. and its generic version is ziprasidone.

What is Geodon?

Geodon belongs to the atypical antipsychotics drug class and is commonly used to treat schizophrenia and the manic symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults. Although Geodon is only FDA-approved for adults 18 years and older, some doctors prescribe it off-label in children who are at least 12 years old. This prescription drug reduces hallucinations and helps your cognitive functions to improve resulting in clearer thinking and a more positive feeling about yourself. You also feel less agitated, and take a more active part in everyday life while using Geodon. Geodon essentially works by helping to repair the balance of certain natural substances in the brain (neurotransmitters).

Before taking Geodon, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and medical history. This drug should not be used if you have a heart rhythm disorder, a history of long QT syndrome, heart failure, if you have recently had a heart attack, or if you are allergic to any of the active ingredients in Geodon. There are some drugs that may cause negative, sometimes fatal, reactions when mixed with Geodon. Ensure you inform your healthcare specialist about all medications that you may be taking. This includes herbal and vitamin supplements, prescription, and over-the-counter medicines. Once this drug has been prescribed for you, be sure to you it exactly as your doctor has instructed. Do not stop taking your medication without medical advice from your doctor. While taking Geodon, do not drink alcohol. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how Geodon affects you.

What are the side effects of Geodon?

The most common side effects reported with Geodon use include dizziness, drowsiness, unusual tiredness, nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation, changes in vision, feeling restless, tremors or twitching, headache, rash, or runny nose, new or worsening cough.

Allergic reactions to Geodon are rare. Get medical help immediately if you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you have dizziness, fast/pounding heartbeat, fluttering in the chest, rash with fever, or swollen glands, call your doctor right away.

This is not a complete list of side effects so speak to your doctor about other possible side effects that may occur while you are taking Geodon. You may also report any side effects you have experienced to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for medical advice and additional information regarding side effects or drug interactions.
