What is Bicalutamide?

Bicalutamide is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer, which is prostate cancer that has spread (metastasized) to the lymph nodes, bones, and internal organs.

The growth of prostate cancer may be stimulated by male hormones, such as testosterone. Bicalutamide blocks male hormone receptors in the prostate. By blocking these receptors, Bicalutamide blocks the actions of male hormones and helps slow the growth of cancer cells in the prostate.

Bicalutamide is taken along with a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analog, such as leuprolide acetate (Lupron). LHRH analogs stop the production of luteinizing hormone, which plays a role in the production of testosterone.

What are the side effects of Bicalutamide?

The most common side effects of Bicalutamide are hot flashes, weakness, constipation, infections, nausea, shortness of breath, blood in the urine, and diarrhea. Other side effects include back pain, abdominal pain, pelvic pain, swelling in the arms or legs, dizziness, trouble sleeping, weight loss, weight gain, rash, and sweating. Consult a healthcare professional medical advice if side effects persist or worsen.

Serious side effects of Bicalutamide include severe liver damage or liver failure. Gynecomastia, or the enlargement of breast tissue in men, has also been reported with Bicalutamide. Bicalutamide may cause an increased risk of bleeding when it is taken with an anticoagulant drug like warfarin.

Consult your healthcare provider for other possible side effects, drug interactions, warnings, and precautions before taking Bicalutamide.
