Fycompa is a brand-name drug manufactured by Eisai Inc. The ingredient in Fycompa is perampanel, but a generic product is not currently available.
Fycompa is used to treat certain types of seizures, including generalized tonic-clonic seizures and partial-onset seizures with or without secondarily generalized seizures. Fycompa contains the ingredient perampanel, which belongs to a class of drugs called anticonvulsants. These drugs work to control or prevent seizures.
This drug is available in the following forms: tablets and an oral suspension. Fycompa is taken orally once a day, at bedtime. The dosage of Fycompa depends on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Your doctor may start you on a low dose and gradually increase it to reduce your risks of side effects.
It is not recommended to use Fycompa if you are allergic to perampanel. Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, or a history of mental illness or substance use disorder to ensure this drug is right for you.
Fycompa is a controlled medication and must be used exactly as prescribed to reduce the risk of addiction, which is higher if you suffer from a substance use disorder. Some side effects of Fycompa are loss of balance, trouble walking, dizziness, a sensation of spinning, unsteadiness, falls, drowsiness, headache, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, back pain, weight gain, fatigue, sleepiness, hostility, and irritability. Talk to your doctor before using Fycompa as other side effects may occur. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how Fycompa affects you.
Some persons may also experience depression, unusual changes or sudden changes in mood, thoughts, or behavior, and suicidal thoughts or attempts. Fycompa has a boxed warning, which is the strongest warning required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The warning states that Fycompa may cause serious or life-threatening psychiatric and behavioral reactions. These may include aggression, hostility, irritability, anger, and thoughts of homicide. Patients who take Fycompa should be monitored for changes in mood, behavior, and personality, especially when starting Fycompa or when the dose is increased. If these symptoms occur, consult your doctor or get emergency medical help, as the medication may need to be discontinued based on the symptoms and their severity.
Before taking Fycompa, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and medical history. Tell your doctor about all of the medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and vitamins or supplements.
If you experience itching of the face, tongue or throat, swollen lymph nodes, rash, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing, these may be signs of an allergic reaction. Although an allergic reaction to Fycompa is rare, get emergency medical help right away if any of these side effects happen to you.
Consult your doctor or healthcare provider for additional information and medical advice.
