Berinert is a prescription medication used to treat the swelling problems that occur with certain immune diseases known as hereditary angioedema (HAE). HAE is caused by low levels or improper function of C1-inhibitor, which is a natural substance produced by the body. This condition can cause symptoms such as rapid swelling of the hands, feet, limbs, face, tongue or throat. Berinert works by increasing the level of C1-inhibitor to help treat attacks of sudden swelling.
Berinert comes in the form of an intravenous kit. It is administered by injection into a vein, at the first signs of an HAE attack. Your dosage is based on your weight and your current medical condition. Consideration is also paid to other medications you might be using that may interact negatively with Berinert.
