What is Avalide?
Avalide (irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide) is a combination blood pressure drug that relaxes the blood vessels and rids the body of extra water. Combined, these effects reduce blood pressure. Avalide is prescribed to patients with high blood pressure who have not succeeded with a single type of drug.
Irbesartan belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin receptor blockers, which block a protein that causes blood vessels to contract. As the blood vessels relax, they grow wider, and the blood pressure within them falls.
Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to a class of drugs called diuretics, or “water pills,” which increase the amount of salt and water in your urine. Lowering the amount of water in the bloodstream lowers the pressure within the blood vessels. Thiazide diuretics are often one of the first types of medication prescribed to people with high blood pressure.
