What is Accuretic?

Accuretic is a combination prescription drug that lowers high blood pressure (hypertension). Accuretic combines two separate drugs that use unrelated mechanisms to lower blood pressure. Accuretic, like other combination blood pressure drugs, is only prescribed when high blood pressure has not responded to single-drug therapy.

The active ingredients in Accuretic are quinapril, an ACE inhibitor, and hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic or “water pill.”

Quinapril lowers blood pressure by blocking the action of angiotensin, a protein that causes the blood vessels to tighten. Blocking angiotensin, which means “blood vessel tightener,” causes the blood vessels to relax and become wider, lowering the pressure within the blood vessel.

Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to a class of drugs called thiazides. These medications block the kidney's ability to reabsorb water or salt from the urine, so more water and salt is excreted in the urine. Water in the blood decreases and blood pressure goes down. Thiazide diuretics are commonly prescribed as single-drug therapy for blood pressure. They work well and have few side effects. Accuretic is taken as a tablet once daily.

The most common side effects of Accuretic are headache, dizziness, cough, fatigue, and muscle pain. The most serious but rare side effects are dehydration, low potassium, low sodium, low blood pressure, liver damage, and liver failure. Mental and mood changes are extremely rare. Allergic reactions are rare but could be severe and include anaphylaxis, a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
