Is there a generic of Hyzaar?

Hyzaar is a brand-name prescription drug that is manufactured by Organon. The generic version of Hyzaar is losartan-hydrochlorothiazide, which is made by several manufacturers.

What is Hyzaar?

Hyzaar is a combination prescription medication that is used to treat high blood pressure. It contains an angiotensin II receptor blocker (losartan) and a diuretic or water pill (hydrochlorothiazide). Hyzaar may also be used to reduce the likelihood of stroke in patients with high blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Hyzaar may not help Black patients with hypertension and LVH. Hyzaar has not been studied in patients who are younger than 18 years old.

Do not take Hyzaar if you are allergic to any of its ingredients including losartan potassium or hydrochlorothiazide.

Before taking Hyzaar tell your doctor about any other medical conditions you are being treated for or if you have glaucoma, diabetes, gout, asthma, allergies, kidney disease, or if you are unable to urinate. If you are pregnant or become pregnant while taking Hyzaar tell your doctor immediately. Hyzaar should not be used during pregnancy because it may harm or cause the death of an unborn baby during the second or third trimester. Hyzaar should not be used while breastfeeding. You also need to tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking including all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and vitamins or herbal supplements. If you are taking potassium supplements or if you have diabetes and are taking a medication that contains aliskiren (such as Tekturna or Tekturna HCT), tell your healthcare provider.

Only take Hyzaar as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all the directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides. Depending on your response to treatment, your doctor may need to occasionally adjust your dose. If you have vomiting or diarrhea, or if you are sweating more than usual when taking Hyzaar, call your doctor for medical advice. Your doctor will tell you how often to check your blood pressure while taking Hyzaar. 

One of the ingredients in Hyzaar, hydrochlorothiazide, can increase the risk of skin cancer. While taking Hyzaar, avoid sunlight and tanning beds. If you are outside, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (and reapply frequently). Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes without approval from your doctor. Avoid alcohol while taking Hyzaar, because it can lower your blood pressure and cause side effects. When you are exercising and/or outside in hot weather, drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. 

What are the side effects of Hyzaar?

Common side effects of Hyzaar include dizziness, cold or upper respiratory infection, cough, stuffy nose, sun sensitivity, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and back pain.

You could also experience serious side effects while using Hyzaar such as severe low blood pressure; kidney, liver, or pancreas problems; or new or worsening symptoms of lupus (joint pain or skin rash). If you have signs of an allergic reaction such as rash hives, itching, trouble breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, throat, and tongue, get emergency medical help right away.
