What is Solu-Cortef?
Solu-Cortef is a brand-name prescription hydrocortisone infusion or injection used when oral administration is not sufficient to address the condition. These conditions include active episodes of multiple sclerosis, severe allergic reactions, severe asthma, severe skin reactions to drugs, respiratory illnesses, swelling caused by tubercular meningitis or trichinosis, swelling in the brain, and similar conditions. Solu-Cortef is also used to relieve symptoms in patients with leukemia or lymphoma and to induce urination in people with proteinuria, a condition in which there is a high amount of protein in the urine.
Solu-Cortef is also used as an emergency hormone replacement therapy in patients with adrenal insufficiency. The adrenal gland produces a hormone nearly identical to hydrocortisone. Solu-Cortef replaces that hormone in an urgent situation.
Solu-Cortef is a corticosteroid, a family of drugs that reduces swelling by blocking the immune system's ability to release chemicals that cause swelling.
Solu-Cortef is administered as an intravenous infusion, intravenous injection, or intramuscular injection by a healthcare professional. It is not intended for continuous corticosteroid treatment, so the patient will be transitioned to a simpler injection or an oral corticosteroid.
What are the side effects of Solu-Cortef?
The most common side effects of Solu-Cortef include but are not limited to acne, stomach upset, headache, dizziness, insomnia, increased appetite, weight gain, fluid retention, and menstrual changes. Many patients will experience injection site reactions such as pain, swelling, or redness. The active ingredient in Solu-Cortef, hydrocortisone, may cause mood swings. Allergic reactions are rare, but discontinue Solu-Cortef at any sign of an allergic reaction, such as rash, hives, or trouble breathing.
