What is Prednisone?

Prednisone is a generic prescription medication used to decrease inflammation caused by various conditions. Prednisone may be used to treat arthritis, lung diseases, skin conditions, digestive illnesses, infectious diseases, and allergic reactions. It may also be used to prevent rejection after organ transplantation.

Prednisone is classified as a corticosteroid that works by suppressing the immune system and reducing the activity of inflammatory substances in the body. It is available in the form of an oral tablet or liquid that can be taken with food or as directed by a healthcare provider.

If you are using the liquid form of this medication, ensure you use an appropriate measuring device. Do not use household spoons to measure a dose because you may not get the correct dose. Your doctor or healthcare provider may recommend taking prednisone in the morning, as it can cause stimulation and trouble sleeping at night.

Once you begin treatment, you should not stop taking this medication without speaking with your healthcare provider first. Your condition may become worse if you suddenly stop taking this drug. Check with your healthcare provider on the best way to complete treatment with Prednisone, as you may need to slowly reduce your dosage before stopping the medication.

What are the side effects of Prednisone?

The most common side effects resulting from the use of Prednisone include increased appetite, weight gain, increased blood pressure, mood changes, and swelling of the hands, arms, legs, ankles, or face. Contact your doctor or healthcare provider if you experience any side effects that persist or worsen.

Serious side effects of Prednisone include Cushing’s syndrome, an increased risk of infections, low potassium levels, perforated bowel, decreased bone density, cataracts, glaucoma, and disrupted growth and development (in children). Live vaccines should be avoided during treatment with Prednisone. In addition, Prednisone may need to be avoided in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Prednisone may cause blood sugar levels to rise (hyperglycemia), which can cause or worsen diabetes. Inform your healthcare provider if you experience symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst or urination. If you have diabetes, then you may need to monitor your blood sugar regularly. Your diabetes medication may need to be adjusted during treatment with Prednisone.

This is not a complete list of adverse effects. Other side effects not listed here may occur while taking this medication. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice and information about side effects or drug interactions before starting treatment.

Can you get Prednisone over-the-counter?

Prednisone should only be taken under the guidance of a healthcare provider. Due to the risk of potential side effects, a healthcare provider will make a complete assessment and recommend an appropriate dosage. Prednisone is not available over the counter.

What is the brand name of Prednisone?

Prednisone is a generic medication. Deltasone is a brand-name prescription drug alternative to Prednisone. Other brand names of Prednisone include Rayos, Prednicot, Prednisone Intensol, and Sterapred.
