What is Cortef?
Cortef is a brand-name prescription drug that is prescribed to reduce swelling across a broad spectrum of diseases and conditions. Because the adrenal gland produces a hormone nearly identical to the active ingredient in Cortef, hydrocortisone, treatment with Cortef or generic hydrocortisone is the treatment of choice for hormone replacement when the adrenal gland does not produce enough hormones.
Cortef is a corticosteroid, a family of drugs that reduces swelling by blocking the immune system's ability to release chemicals that cause swelling. Cortef is taken as a tablet. The dosage will depend on the underlying condition being treated.
