Ondansetron is a serotonin receptor antagonist used to prevent nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. Also known as an antiemetic, Ondansetron blocks the actions of serotonin, which stimulates the part of the brain that controls nausea.
Ondansetron is available as an orally disintegrating tablet in strengths of 4 mg and 8 mg. It is usually administered before and after chemotherapy or radiation. Ondansetron orally-disintegrating tablets are placed on top of the tongue and allowed to dissolve. It is not necessary to administer Ondansetron with a liquid.
The most common side effects of Ondansetron are headache, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, and a general feeling of being unwell (malaise).
