Sancuso is a brand-name prescription medication administered as a transdermal patch for continuous release. Generic granisetron, the active ingredient in Sancuso, is available as a tablet or injection, but not as a transdermal patch for continuous release.
Sancuso is a prescription drug that relieves nausea due to cancer chemotherapy that continues for five days or more.
Granisetron, the active ingredient in Sancuso, blocks a receptor, called 5HT-3, found only on nerves that are responsible for initiating, sending, and receiving messages about irritants in the small intestine. Because of Sancuso, irritation in the small intestines is not “communicated” to the brain to start a nausea response.
Sancuso is placed on the arm as a transdermal patch 24 to 48 hours before the start of chemotherapy and removed 24 hours or more after the end of chemotherapy. It can be worn for up to seven days.
Side effects of Sancuso include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, loss of appetite, stomach pain, temporary hair loss, and problems sleeping.
Sancuso causes serotonin levels in the body to rise; serotonin is a chemical that transmits signals between nerves. High serotonin causes mental and mood changes, such as anxiety, agitation, hallucinations, and loss of coordination, along with overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Allergic reactions are not common, but you should talk to your doctor if you notice a rash, swelling, or start to have trouble breathing.
This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Please consult with your prescribing physician about possible side effects of Sancuso and any other concerns you may have.
