The active ingredient in Anzemet, dolasetron, blocks the nerve cells in the stomach and in the brain's “nausea center” which produce nausea and the vomiting reflex.
Anzemet is administered as a tablet or injection. Anzemet is administered 30 minutes (injection) or 60 minutes (tablet) before chemotherapy infusions. To prevent nausea due to surgery, Anzemet is administered as an injection 15 minutes before anesthesia is ended. To treat post-operative nausea, Anzemet is injected when the patient begins to feel nauseous.
The side effects of Anzemet include, but are not limited to, headache (in about one in four patients), diarrhea, stomach pain, dizziness, drowsiness, fever, chills, shivering, numbness, constipation, fatigue, joint pain, and muscle pain. Mental and mood changes may include anxiety. Allergic reactions have not been reported. The most serious but rare side effects reported include irregular heartbeat and heart attack.
