Is there a generic of Ssd?

Ssd is a brand-name prescription medication that is manufactured by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Inc. Silver sulfadiazine cream is the generic equivalent of Ssd. Similar medications include Thermazene and mafenide acetate.

What is Ssd?

Ssd is a brand-name sulfonamide antibiotic cream that is used to prevent infections and treat wounds in patients with second and third-degree burns. It works by fighting bacteria and yeast on the skin. Ssd should not be used on premature babies or infants younger than two months old.

Do not use Ssd if you are allergic to sulfa antibiotics.

Before using Ssd you should check with your doctor to ensure it is safe for you to do so. If you have a history of liver disease, kidney disease, or G6PD deficiency (genetic enzyme deficiency), you should tell your healthcare provider before using Ssd. You also need to tell your doctor about all the medications you are using including all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements to avoid drug interactions and adverse reactions.

What doses of Ssd are available?

Ssd is available as a topical cream in various strengths.

You should only use Ssd as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use more or less than the recommended dosage or for longer than your doctor prescribes. Ssd cream is usually applied to the skin twice each day, and the cream should be reapplied if it is removed by activity or other therapy. Burns should be covered with Ssd cream at all times. However, your treated skin may be left uncovered or can be covered with gauze if this is recommended by your healthcare provider.

Skipping doses of Ssd can increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics.

Ssd is for external use. Avoid applying to areas around the eyes, unless directed by your doctor. Keep Ssd cream out of the reach of children and pets.

What are the side effects of Ssd?

Common side effects of Ssd include pain, burning, or itching of the treated skin. Your gums may also become blue or gray in color.

If you have serious side effects such as signs of infection including fever or chills, easy bruising or bleeding, rapid breathing or fast heartbeat, signs of kidney problems or mood changes, call your doctor immediately.

If you have signs of an allergic reaction after using Ssd such as itching, hives, trouble breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, throat or tongue, get immediate medical attention.

This is not a complete list of the possible side effects Ssd and you may experience others not listed above. For a complete list of side effects, you can talk with your healthcare provider. You can also report any side effects to the FDA.
