What is the brand name of Prenaissance Plus?
Prenaissance Plus is a branded generic prescription prenatal multivitamin, that is, it is a brand-name product sold as at generic prices. Prenaissance Plus is nearly identical to the generic prenatal multivitamin, Prenaissance, but it is missing vitamin C. It is also very similar to PNV DHA, a generic prenatal vitamin also from Acella. Similar prescription products include Obtrex DHA and Duet Dual DHA. There is no specific generic version of Prenaissance Plus, but its key ingredients are found in over-the-counter prenatal multivitamin formulas, such as Prenate Essential and Enfamil Expecta.
What is Prenaissance Plus?
Prenaissance Plus is a generic prescription prenatal multivitamin to provide dietary supplementation to pregnant women or women who have just given childbirth.
The active ingredients are folate (vitamin B6), cobalamin (vitamin B12), vitamin D, iron, calcium, magnesium, and docosahexaeonoic acid (DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid).
During and after pregnancy, women are often deficient in vitamins B6, B9, and iron. Because all of them are used by the body to make red blood cells, a deficiency in these nutrients often results in anemia, or a shortage of red blood cells.
The deficiencies in these vitamins can also affect the development of the fetus or baby. Both folate and pyridoxine are part of the process the body uses to create energy from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Pyridoxine supports the growth of the fetus's nervous system at some of the most critical points in its development.
Other nutrients in Prenaissance Plus support the fetus's growth. Both vitamin A and calcium support the development of the fetus's bones. Omega-3 fatty acids are used to build the brain and retinas.
Both vitamin D and E are taken during pregnancy to avoid complications.
The iron in Prenaissance Plus is elemental iron (carbonyl iron) that is easily absorbed and used by the body. Iron supplementation normally produces side effects such as constipation and hard stools, but elemental iron often produces more pronounced side effects. For this reason, Prenaissance Plus includes docusate, a stool softener, to prevent these side effects.
Prenaissance Plus is taken as softgel once daily.
What are the side effects of Prenaissance Plus?
Side effects from multivitamins, though rare, include but are not limited to constipation, diarrhea, or upset stomach. The iron in Prenaissance Plus, ferrous fumarate, can cause constipation, hard stools, and dark stools. Prenaissance Plus includes docusate, a stool softener laxative, to help prevent these side effects.
Allergic reactions to vitamins are very rare, but Prenaissance Plus contains inactive ingredients such as lecithin that may cause an allergic reaction.
Multivitamins with minerals, such as Prenaissance Plus, taken in large doses can result in side effects and injury. Pyridoxine continually taken in excess can cause irreversible nerve damage. Iron, an essential part of our diet, is poisonous at high doses, and calcium can cause high blood calcium, a potentially health-threatening condition. Take only one softgel daily as instructed.
